A gifted and versatile musician: organist at Square Chapel, co-founder of the Dean Clough Glee and Madrigal society, and for 30 years the popular conductor of the Sunday School Jubilees that annually filled the Piece Hall with 560 instruments, 25,000 voices, and large audiences.

Of Whitworth’s Mill at Luddenden Foot. Mayor of Halifax, Vice-chair of the Mechanics Institute. Died while out riding his pony in the Welsh hills, having first tied the pony to a tree.

Another prominent Chartist, Shackleton of Queensbury, secretary of the West Riding Chartist Association, was “considered the finest speaker in the district.. a very able writer and debater.” (Ben Wilson). Buried next to fellow Chartist Ben Rushton.
